International Requirements for Appliance Carriage: Can I Bring an Appliance Onboard?
Each country has its own baggage rules. Most of them are the same for all countries. The conditions may partly differ depending on airline policies. Standard requirements are the same – it is prohibited to carry weapons, explosive and toxic substances, and other dangerous items on board.
- Both joint and separate transportation (on passenger flights – cargo and people, on different – only shipment) can be performed.
- Each shipment that exceeds the established dimensions and weight can be accepted for transportation only with the consent of the representative of the organization providing forwarding services.
International requirements for the carriage of the appliance
International destinations must meet the following requirements:
- Their air transportation must comply with the laws of the states through which the vehicle will take place;
- Dimensions and weight of each item must provide freedom in loading and placing in the aircraft;
- All necessary documentation is required for each shipment;
- The baggage must not pose a danger to the plane or its passengers.
You can bring your appliance on board if you are flying to another country to have appliance repair.
Electronics and appliances are generally allowed on almost all airlines. However, each of them has its requirements for the size and type of items carried.
Types of baggage
All things carried on an airplane can be called luggage. It comes in three types:
- checked out – these are all bags and items checked into the airplane’s baggage compartment or sent on a separate flight;
- hand luggage – these are bags and articles (limited in quantity and dimensions), which a passenger is allowed to take on board
- personal items are items carried in the cabin which are not registered as Cabin baggage.
The size and quantity of hand baggage are set by the airline. Anything exceeding the established dimensions is checked in as luggage and carried in the cargo hold or on a separate flight.
According to statistics as of mid-2019, people carry the following types of cargo on domestic flights:
- consumer goods – 32.2%;
- various equipment – 13.9%;
- food products – 10.9%.
On international flights are transported:
- automotive and other spare parts – 18.1%;
- clothing – 13.7%;
- appliance & electronics- 11.9%.
Calculating luggage allowances
Before taking electronics and home appliances on a trip, you should familiarize yourself with the weight and dimensions permitted.
The system of calculating by weight is used by most Asian and European countries. Standard weight norms of one luggage piece (may differ depending on the conditions of the airline) are as follows:
- 45 lbs – economy class;
- 65 lbs – business and first-class;
- 22 lbs – for children under two years old.
According to the weight system, the air carrier limits passengers exactly in cargo weight, but not in the amount of weight. One citizen whose ticket includes 45 lbs of luggage can carry two bags, each weighing 22 lbs. Each lbs over the allotted amount are paid for separately, according to the rates of the company.
Maximum dimensions are limited to 80 inches (sum of three dimensions).
Different rules apply for flights departing or departing from the United States, Canada, Mexico, and South American states. Each citizen whose fare includes baggage is entitled to carry:
one piece weighing no more than 50 lbs – economy class (from the United States and Canada, two elements are most often provided);
Two pieces not exceeding 50 lbs each – business class.
The size limit is 62 inches (sum of three measurements).
Accordingly, you can transport electronics and appliances if they meet the weight and size requirements.
The size and weight of the equipment being transported are counted together with the packaging. For example, if a television set fits within the permitted dimensions but exceeds them because of the wrapped film, cardboard, or case, it cannot be transported under the general rules.
What you can take in the cabin
In addition to hand baggage, you can take the following appliance or electronic items into the cabin:
- smartphone (necessarily in enabled “flight mode”);
- player;
- tablet PC, laptop computer;
- electronic book;
- photo and video cameras;
- toasters;
- portable chargers (air carriers impose restrictions on their power and capacity).
It is also allowed to take small household appliances for self-care in the cabin:
- hair curler;
- safety electric razors;
- electric toothbrushes;
- electric hairbrushes, etc.
These lists include items permitted under the general rules of carriage. Airlines have the right to independently determine the list of permitted electronic and domestic appliances that can be carried on board. To clarify this information, please contact the carrier’s information service.
May you use them during the flight?
Earlier it was forbidden to use appliances and communication devices on board. However, this rule has been abolished. Since 2016, every passenger has the right to use permitted electronic devices (laptop, smartphone, etc.).
